Things you can do with the engine still in the car.
The Haynes Manual has this to say on the subject of major operations that can be done with the engine still in the car.The following operations can be carried out with the engine in the car:
(a) Removal and refitting of the cylinder head and valve gear
(b) Removal and refitting of the timing chain and sprockets
(c) Removal and refitting of the clutch and flywheel
(d) Removal and refitting of the engine mountings
There is one more major job that can be carried out with the engine in situ.
On a recent job I had to remove most of the cooling system. The radiator, hoses, fan, pulley and water pump were all out of the car. I noticed how easy it was to work on the right hand side of the engine bay. There was nothing between the engine block and the inner wing. I' d thought no more about this until I was reading an article in the Internet Mini Encyclopedia about camshafts and right at the bottom of the page was a description on how to replace the camshaft without removing the engine.
